Jim, while I can see that your colors started to blend on the paper, I do think you achieved some optical blending in this drawing. I like the background very much, and the colors in the face are quite good. I also like very much the way the edge of the hair diffuses into that yellow background. What I don't like are the black strokes you used to outline the features. The black is too strong for those areas, plus the idea for this drawing was to draw everything in the same way - i.e., as little dabs of pure color that sit inside the squares. Such a drawing will never having precise detail, but this is not at all the point here. See above for Helen's face. It's very soft, but you can still make out where all the features are. Finally, I would like to see more light colors in the blue and more dark ones in the light areas -- not a lot, but just little dabs here and there. This will make your colors much richer and heighten the effect of optical blending.
What an expressive piece, Jim! It reminds me of a beautiful impasto oil painting. The expression of the figure is enjoyable as well, you give the viewer just enough context to interpret. The pops of orange in the blue shirt are great as well. I think the nose is getting a little muddy and blue, adding a peach highlight could help it. Great work!
The prostrate is very successful. But I can still feel the sense of bending. Maybe you can make your oil pastel shaper to create a clean line between each square.
the colors are interesting. i do feel though that the colors blend together a lot to where i don't really see shapes. i think it would be more interesting to have a bit more definition in the shapes that were used
Jim, I think you've done a great job! The use of blues and these bright yellow-oranges are complement each other so well in this piece. The nose and chin however look a little iffy if that makes sense. I would go in with a skin tone color and just lighten those parts up a bit. Other than that, great job!
I like your brushwork, your brushwork is relaxed and natural. The expressions of the characters in your work are very vivid. But I think your background may need more yellow.

ReplyDeleteI like your work a lot, your way of blending is so loose, And the colors are vibrant. I have nothing to critique.
