THE MYSTERIOUS OBJECT:
The purpose of this assignment is to further practice drawing drapery while exploring drapery's dual-function, which is to conceal and reveal simultaneously. Clothing is the most common form of drapery, and with clothing it's easy to understand how this dual-function works: Clothing serves to cover what we don't want to show, but at the same time it reveals -- in infinitely varied ways -- something of the structure of the body underneath and of the personality of the wearer.
Select a piece of fabric (an article of clothing, a sheet, a tablecloth, etc.) and some kind of rigid object (a lamp, a bottle, a vase, etc.). (Helpful hint: Steer clear of fabrics with stripes or patterns on them, as these will make your task more difficult!) Create a set-up where the fabric covers most or all of the object in an interesting way. Make a drawing of your set-up using charcoal and/or charcoal pencil. Concentrate both on depicting the folds in the fabric as it drapes over your object and on generating a sense of mystery about the covered object. Make the viewer want to know what's underneath the drapery by providing visual clues that provoke interest without revealing the identity of the form.
Materials: Conte crayon or charcoal, sketch vellum.
